I have had Botox now 4 times. I started when I was 28 and have had it sporadically in between having the boys. I am not ashamed to say I love it. I love the effects, the results and the compliments. For me, having botox isn’t necessarily about keeping aging at bay. I’m quite happy to age, I am proud of my life, my age and who I am. I don’t mind the odd wrinkle, I think its part of life and I want my face (believe it or not) to show my age. However, I like botox for the effects that it gives me in terms of looking more awake, more refreshed and less tired. Being a Mum to two Mad Lads does make me look shattered most of the time. Botox seems to eliminate some of this.
I like the results to be really subtle. Hardly noticeable. And having a good practitioner is part of that. For my most recent treatment I have collaborated with ABT Aesthetics. Ashley, is a local practitioner to me and comes to your home. She’s a registered nurse, with experience in infection control so you know you are in safe hands. She’s also honest about what can be achieved and knowledgeable. I find recommendations are the best way to find a good practitioner. If you know someone who is happy with their work then that’s a good sign you should be too. However, everyones face is different and skin types so the results will, of course, vary.
When I met with Ashley for my initial consultation, I explained to her that I like to see a “brow lift” after having Botox injections. This lifts my brows, subtly, and makes me seem more awake and my eyes bigger. See below. Can you see the subtle difference in my eyebrow shape? Keep reading for a more dramatic picture when I’m smiling!
Ashley understood what I wanted straight away and knew where to inject to achieve this look. If you are thinking of having botox, I would suggest being clear about what you want to achieve. The clearer you are about what you don’t like or want to eliminate the better chance that your practitioner can achieve that. Tell them exactly the lines you don’t like, a general “get rid of all my wrinkles” wont cut it. It’s terrible because you start scrutising your face, but again a good practitioner will be honest about what you DONT need as much as what you do.
What is Botox? It’s proper name is Botulinum toxin Type A. Botox is the most common brand, although there are others on the market which can be used. It works by temporarily weakening the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles, resulting in a smoother appearance. It is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world, You can treat frown lines between the eyebrows, crows feet around the eyes, horizontal forehead lines, the lower face and neck and even to combat excessive sweating. Using a tiny needle, small quantities are injected under the skin where the wrinkles are most troublesome. It temporarily blocks the nerve signal to the muscles which relaxes them. The nerve stops working due to lack of stimulation and a new nerve grows in its place- this is when the movement returns and the effects begin to fade. Usually between 3 and 5 months.
It takes 2 weeks to see the full effects of the treatment and I did notice a gradual change in these two weeks. The first effects were felt the day after. The most common question I have been asked is “Does it hurt?” and I can honestly say not at all. The most it hurt was a small sting in some areas but that was it. Side effects are uncommon and temporary. You may experience bruising or tenderness around the injection site or a mild headaches being the most common. There are also more uncommon side effects which a good practitioner will familiarise you with. I was provided with lots of information by ABT aesthetics that answers all my questions and I could keep to refer back to. Ashley was also available at the end of the phone for any questions if they should arise.
I am so happy with my results. I think this picture below shows what can be achieved and how subtle it is. My forehead is smoother, my eyebrows are lifted. I also find my makeup goes on better and easier and I need less! I find botox clears my skin up and gives me a glow. For anyone considering it, I would say go for it. Just make sure you know what you want to achieve and find a good practitioner. If you are in Kent please check out ABT Aesthetics who you can contact Here
