Mummy and the Clock.
What’s the time? Is there anything they need?
A nappy change? When was his last feed?
Through the night we check the clock each time they wake,
And under our breath mutter- “fucks sake.”
1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 4
Trying to sneak out his room without creaking the door.
The clock is watching, tick-ticking away.
“How much sleep do YOU get?” all the other mums say-
And we know to the minute each time we left bed.
And tell each other softly, while scratching our heads.
The clock is counting each precious moment of missed sleep. From 2am to 4am it seems to suddenly leap.
During the daytime we need it to remind us what’s next. How long till bedtime- when we can have a rest?
Out of all the things Mummy needs the clock most. And when she has 6 hours sleep- allow her to boast.
We are always watching it -counting hours and minutes away. But really we should stop and learn to saviour each day.
They grow so fast and that clock will not wait. Try not to spend it worrying about the last time that they ate.
